Lemus-Valle

University of California, Santa Barbara

Hello! My name is Jocelyn Lemus-Valle.

I grew up with a twin sister and later on found out there was another set of twins coming to the family. Little did I know they would be the biggest blessing in my life. As an older sibling I had the opportunity to be a mentor, role model, and teacher. Not only did I try my best to play these roles , but I now realized that they have taught me more than I could have ever imagined.

When my younger twin sisters were three, one was identified as being on the spectrum. This project was inspired by my little sister Sarahi, who is now 11 years-old. When my family and I found out she was on the spectrum,I tried my best to educate myself about what Autism is. However, no article or YouTube video could have possibly taught me what I've learned in these past 8 years. Although I am still learning how to best support and advocate for my sister and the rest of the Autism community, the biggest lesson I have learned is the need to raise awareness. Being aware is the first step to knowing how to help people with Autism and other disabilities.

Now that I'm in college, my goal is to keep using my experiences and connections with my sister to find different ways to advocate and support people who may live with what can be sometimes an invisible disability.
